Reflection #10

One more day, guys! I've been honored to work with you this summer and hope you will leave the classroom with a little more knowledge than you came with the first day.

Take a moment to reflect back on your experience this summer. If you look back at the course in ten years (let's say), what would you like to remember about Asia and its history? How will you keep this experience and your newfound knowledge fresh as you continue your studies? Be sure to address at least three things you hope you take with you from this course. This reflection will be completed in class today &/or tomorrow, so you do not need to work on it at home.

Thanks again for making this a great summer! I hope you guys had fun. Feel free to keep in touch, and DO add me as a friend on Facebook (if you use it). I will be interested to watch you all grow into knowledgeable and thoughtful adults in the very near future.

Aloha,
Miss Yun

When I first came into this class at the beginning of summer, I thought to myself, "this is going to be really boring." But as the days went on and I got to know everyone a little better, the class seemed more and more interesting. Yes, class was really boring at times (reading from the text then taking notes) but all of the other fun things like field trips and games leveled out the boring. If I looked back at this course in ten years, I probably would like to remember the field trips and videos we got to watch for the course. The videos especially gave us good insight on what we were learning and that just gave me a different view of things. To keep all of the material we learned in my mind, I will probably have to refer to all of the notes we took in class. I have so much papers strewn all over my room, and all of them are from this class. If I look back at those, that will probably jog my memory and bring back this class. I hope to remember the Japanese and Chinese history a lot more than I used to because that is part of my ethnicity. Knowing a lot about what kind of ethnicity you are is beneficial in the long run.Thankfully this class was well put together and taking things away will be pretty easy.

I found this class quite difficult over the past 6 weeks but this class was a great learning experience for me. Three things I hope to take with me are new essay writing skills, better studying habits and better homework habits. In the beginning, all three for me were very bad, as I needed improvement. This class helped me succeed in learning all of these three things . My essay skills to me have improved since last year during my freshmen year. It was a struggle for me to write a good essay but now, I have a better understanding of what a good essay needs. I learned better studying habits because all of all the exams. The exams helped me study more than I usually do, and the fact that we had all these tests helped me study better, and harder so I could succeed. Then there is the homework issue, which helped me out a lot. Since there was a lot of homework, during next year, I will already be used to the load of homework. This class helped me prepare for all three of these things.

Before taking this course, I didn’t really know anything about Asia at all. To me, Asia was just kind of a big continent that was next to Europe. We have studied lots of US history and some European, so I am thankful that I got a chance to learn about Asia. Years from now, I will probably remember all the field trips we went on. I had a lot of fun going to Chinatown so I will probably remember that for a while. I will also probably remember the art academy and the different philosophies Asia has. It was interesting learning about other philosophies/ religions in contrast to Christianity. I also learned that in Asia they don’t just eat rice. Even though I should have realized that Asian countries have noodles, I kind of thought that they all ate rice all the time. Finally, I am thankful I go to school in Hawaii after hearing how some people in Korea went to school for about 14 hours a day. I think that people in Asia must be more dedicated to school than I am. After taking this course, I feel I know something about Asia and it no longer seems like just a big mystery blob.

Coming into Summer School I was thinking how the class was supposedly super easy and that it was an "Easy A" according to my mom. I thought it would be boring with a lot of note taking and that I would just be doing the same thing ever day. I was surprised when I realized that we were going on field trips, got to watch movies, and although there was a bit of note taking it wasn't that bad. Although note taking isn't my favorite thing it's an important thing that I need to learn in life. Some things I would like to remember from this class are all the fun things that we did like the field trips. I would also like to remember about Nanjing, China and the bombing, how Japan became so powerful, it's participation during WWII, and a lot about the Samurai culture. These things are really interesting to me and it has always been something that I didn't mind learning about, I'm glad I got to go into depth about these topics because these countries have come a long way and have been through a lot. Hopefully, I can remember this information by helping out my friends when they take Asian History during the year or finding out more information on my own on things such as the Samurai culture and whatnot.

Thanks for a great summer and I'm glad I got you as a teacher. Although this class was harder than I thought it would be, I learned a lot, more than just Asian History. I learned that when class is hard you can't do anything about it but the work and just try your best no matter what. It also taught me that classes are going to be hard as the years go on and that all I can do is accept it. Thanks again for such an interesting summer.

Throughout this summer's asian history course i have learned a great amount. When i first came to this class i didn't really know anything about the history of China and Japan. Some things that i learned from the China unit are the different dynasties and their accomplishments they made which may or may not have affected the ways of China and Japan. Another thing that this course gave me is more practice as far as writing essays. I learned how to make my introduction and conclusion paragraphs more precise and well structured. The last thing that this course has taught me is the different locations on the maps of China and Japan. The different locations had history of events taken place there behind them such as Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and many other places. Overall this course was really fun and i think we were taught a lot of information considering that we only had 6 weeks of class. I had a lot of fun in this summer's class and i would definately like to learn even more about Asia's history.

This summer in asian history has been really fun. When I first came to class I didn't know anything about asia. I was really interested in learning about my own culture and the culture of the other asian countries surrounding my own. Honestly, on the first day, I thought the class was going to be kind of boring cause of all the note taking and text book reading. But as the summer went on the class became really fun and interesting. The three things that I'm going to remember are the field trips, the jeopardy, and the movies on wednesday.

I lost internet so I'm finishing my post now.

I won't forget all the field trips, the jeopardy and the wednesday movies because they help me to remember all the information that I learned this summer. They were all really fun things to do also. The best field trip was the one we went on this past tuesday. I haven't been to Pearl Harbor since I was in 3rd grade and going there now that I'm older made it way more interesting. Jeopardy was a really fun way to get us thinking about our test. It was also a really good tool to use when studying. The best part was the extra bonus points you get if you win! Even thought we didn't see movies on every wednesday of the summer the ones we did see were very informative and gave a nice look into the culture it was on. All these things were highlights of my summer school and I won't forget them.

Over this course of Asian history, I have learned much more than I thought I would. On the first day I knew close to nothing about Asia whether you asked me about geography or the history of Asia. Now, I know so much valuable information that I wouldn’t have learned other wise. I will keep this experience and knowledge with me because I am taking Mandarin Chinese 1Honors next year and I am sure that the history of China will come up throughout the course. I for sure would like to remember about the different types of government and philosophies China went through to get where it is today. I would also like to remember about how Japan borrowed a lot of China’s ideas to be where they are today. One of the things I would like to remember is our trip to Pearl Harbor, because it had great relevance to our history with Japan. I also really respect those people who died that day in the USS Arizona, because they died for the strong country we have today.

Miss Yun, thank you so much for teaching me about China and Japan. It widened my understanding of the world, and gave me insight of an entirely different culture than mine. Although this course was much harder than I thought it would be, I learned better studying skills that will help me during future history classes. I am thankful for the hard exams because they not only made me strive harder for an A, but they also gave me a reason to look deeper into China and Japan’s history. I think that my understanding of Asia has definitely broadened over the past weeks, and I am glad that I took this course over the summer so that I could better focus on what Asia was like back in history. Thanks so much.

If I were to look back ten years from now, I would most likely remember the concept of Legalism and how Buddhism affected China and Japan. I would also most likely remember how both China and Japan responded to the challenge presented by the West. I will definitely remember that China considered itself to be the center of the universe and called itself the Middle Kingdom. I also will definitely remember how Japan adopted, adapted and became adept in borrowed practices from other countries such as Korea and China.
I will keep this experience and newfound knowledge fresh by saving my essays and notes from this class and using them as a source of reference for the future. Also, I will try to apply some of the ideas and concepts covered in this class to other subjects in order to keep it fresh.
Three things that I hope to take away from this course are the skills involved with writing a well constructed essay, the influence of the West on China and Japan and how the stereotypes of Asian people are not always true. I had a lot of fun during this course and I learned a great amount of information about Japan and China. Everything covered in this course gave new depth to the asian cultures that I thought I knew well. Thank you so much Ms. Yun!!

Throughout this course I learned a lot about Asia that I didn’t know before. I don’t normally listen to the news or read newspapers, so I can sometimes be oblivious to what is going on in the rest of the world. I learned that it can actually be really interesting to see what other countries are like. I’m probably going to remember all the things that we learned on the field trips and in the movies the most, because those were most memorable. I got a much better sense of what the countries were really feeling and experiencing from the movies than from just the textbook. I’m also probably going to remember the philosophies – Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism, and Shinto, because they are so interesting. They are very different to what we usually see today, and before this class I knew absolutely nothing about them. It’s interesting to see how people in other parts of the world see things, and then compare it to how we see things. I also think my thesis essay writing skills have improved a lot because we wrote so many. I learned to make my thesis statements clearer and how to tell the difference between the introduction and conclusion paragraphs. I also have a better understanding of grammar, like the agreeing tenses and the literary present tense. Thank you for being such a thorough grader, and even though it was kind of tough sometimes, I ended up learning a lot and getting a lot more out of this class than history.

There were several things that really stuck out to me in this course. One of those main things being: The dispute between other countries and themselves. When I watched the movie "Nanking" it showed me a lot about how there is so much tension between other countries and it really shows why one ethnicity would hate another. Or if we look a little back from the Nanking incident, we see how many uprisings China has had because of tension; not from other countries. But themselves. If I were to look back on this class, the thing that would most certainly stick is the knowledge about my own ethnicity and how those Asian countries came to be the way they are today.

Throughout this course, I found each lesson difficult but interesting at the same time. I would like to take with me the knowledge I learned about ancient Chinese history. I found China’s previous dynasties and philosophies really interesting. I would also like to remember about World War II and Pearl Harbor. I was really looking forward to learning a little bit about wars and I enjoyed visiting the Arizona Memorial. I would also like to be ale to look back on the different movements and rebellions in China’s history. I found the uprisings really interesting and understood them pretty quickly.
Throughout this class, I found it really helpful to watch videos. They helped me understand the details about different facts better and made learning the information more interesting. I also found the timelines discussed in class useful. It was easier to organize what happened when, and what led to different events.

When I began Asian History this summer I was just a stereotypical person who knew nothing about their cultures or past. I had little knowledge of China or Japan and so it would be hard to leave the class not learning anything. Through this summer class I enjoyed watching the movies, the field trips we’ve taken and I’ve learned how to write better in class essays.
Watching movies in class was always a treat because it was relaxing yet informative. By watching instead of reading about or hearing about, I feel I learned more because it seemed more interesting. The first movie we watched, Hero, was one of my favorites because it was so stereotypical with the martial arts and flying.
Going on field trips was also very enjoyable because it have us time to see friends and also experience historical moments in China and Japan. When we went to Chinatown it was a fun experience along with informational because we had a scavenger hunt that forced us to learn about the ways Chinatown works. When we went to the Pearl Harbor Memorial it was also sad and educational because we watched a movie on the actual attack and learned about the people who went through it.
Throughout this class I think I have written more papers than any other class I’ve ever taken. Because of this, I have become a better writer. I am now able to confidently take an in class essay and feel that it was pretty well done. I used to think before that one hour was not enough to answer an essay question but now I understand that it actually is.
Though at times, like any other class school is boring, but Asian History really did teach me so much about he Asian culture and I am a much less stereotypical person. When I walk down the street and see Asian people, I sometimes think to myself, I probably know more about your cultures history than you do. It’s weird that I was able to obtain so much information in only 6 weeks and though I’m glad the course is over, I am also sad to be leaving my class.

When I came into this class I knew very, very little about the history of Asia. Looking back on my first blog, I was very uninformed about what was going on and what went on in Asia. I was curious but there movies because it taught us the concepts and events we were learning about in whole new ways. If I didn't understand something in class, the movies or seeing it in person on a field trip often helped a lot. I was also very interested in the dynasties. I had no idea this idea of dynasties was so prevalent in both China and Japan's history. I found that really interesting and while I might not always remember each and every individual dynasty, I will remember the concept and how interesting I found it. Overall, this course was a lot of fun for me and while it was harder than i had expected it, I had a good time and I think I am walking away with some very valuable information.

When summer school began, I was a little apprehensive about this class. I thought it would be pretty boring, and a drag to get through six weeks of it. I barely knew anything about Asia, and I thought that it would be a class to get credits out of the way and free up my schedule for sophomore year. However, as the summer went on, I discovered that Asian History is really interesting, and actually carried over a lot of the same principals I learned in World Civ last year, which I guess makes it true that history is a large part repetition of the same ideas in different times and places.

One thing I know I'll remember is how to study -- this class was really difficult, and it I think it helped me refine my studying methods. Playing jeopardy as a review was also really helpful, because it helped us study in a more fun way, and I know it helped me retain some of the information better than if I had just been studying with the book. I would also like to remember everything I learned about the culture of China & Japan, and the way it evolved. Especially the dynastic cycle in China, and how it was a constant cycle for such a long period of time. I'm really glad I took this class over the summer, and was able to learn a lot during the six weeks of class.

I will remember this class as a beginning to the tenth grade. On the first day of Asian history, I thought this class wouldn't be hard. On the first day we wrote a short paper about ourselves and we had to point out what we know about China and its stereotypes. This class quickly got very hard. We had to write several in class essays and we had very difficult exams. Throughout this class I learned how much effort I had to put in this class. This class was very helpful to me. This class will help me a lot throughout the tenth grade. My essay and studying skills have improved some. I will also remember how bad I did in Asian history. This class was a good learning experience and I hope it will help me in future classes.

I came to this class expecting to have an easy A and just coast throught this summer but i was wrong. I ended up having to work and study and not be able to coast through at all. I enjoyed learning about China's different philosophies and religions . I enjoyed learning about the tiny Japanese people called Ainu. I also enjoyed learning about the samurai who are super awesome. This summer has been full of new interesting things and I'm glad that i took this course this summer.

This summer I learned more than I thought was possible to learn about Asian history in such a short period of time. This class was definitely a challenge for me. The pace was fast, but I took away a lot of knowledge from this class. There are many concepts that I can carry over into my life from this class. Aside from learning just history we learned customs and traditions of the countries as well. This is very practical because if the need arises I know my general way around the traditions of Asian countries like China and Japan. I hope to keep the things like Pearl Harbor, Samurai, and Religions of these countries in mind. Pearl Harbor is such an integral part of U.S. history that it is always good to know about and understand thoroughly. The Samurai have been such an influence on Japan with things like the Bushido that they have shaped much of that country’s history. Plus, everyone thinks samurai are pretty awesome so it’s cool to know about them too. And finally religions can be a valuable thing to know about in today’s world. I hope I can remember all of the info that we learned about them so that I can continue to build my knowledge of different religions all around the world.
Thanks for teaching me about all of the different aspects of Asian culture Ms. Yun. Also watching last samurai was cool. I hope you have an awesome summer.

For me, this course probably would've been better during the regular year I didn't want to come to summer school. So I already had a grudge against this class before it started. But all in all, this class was pretty enjoyable. I learned facts about Asia that could probably last me a lifetime!

One thing I'll like to take from this course is knowing how influenced America is from Asia. I didn't really think about much Chinese culture we have in our daily lives. Half the stuff we own in our houses is Chinese. I'l also remember the stress of philosophies. Whether it be Daoism, Shinto, or Confucianism, It seemed like you had to follow a philosophy no matter what. The last thing I'll take from this class is that I never realized how powerful Japan was at one time. Japan was taking so much advantage of China by taking over Korea, Manchuria, and other important ports. Because everyone says that China is going to take over the world someday, I never knew China was so weak at one point. The field trips were fun, just a little hot sometimes (especially Chinatown!)

Overall, this class was interesting. It was cool to learn about my Chinese culture. Thank you so much for teaching me Ms. Yun. I really appreciate your enthusiasm and teaching methods in this class!
